■Interpretation
Zen masters often randomly guide their disciples in their daily lives full of interest. One day, Shandao followed Zen Master Shitou to visit the mountains.Shitou said, “Down with the trees in front of me."Shandao said, "I didn't bring a knife."Zen Master Shitou pulled out his knife and handed it to the Taoist sect.
Shandao asked, “Why don’t you hand me that end?"Shitou said: "What are you doing with that end?"The good path immediately realized. It turns out that the stone asked the good Tao to cut off the tree blocking the road, but only allowed him to break the confusion of his own nature.Good deeds do not understand the purpose of stones.Later, Shi Tou handed one end of the blade to Shandao, meaning that he should not stick to this or the other end. This sentence enables the good path to understand the nature.
